McMurphy's Influence

There is no doubt that everyone in the ward has an opinion of McMurphy. The other patients admire him for his strength in the face of the Nurse's authority, but after his conversation with the lifeguard, McMurphy changes the way he acts, careful not the anger the Nurse. What do you think will result from his change in behavior, in the way the authority views McMurphy and the way the other patients view him?

I believe that McMurphy's change in behavior will create a negative effect on the patients because the one person who had brought them together to take a stand is now going with what he was fighting. This drastic change will make them go back in to the fog.

I think that the patients won't actually have a negative attitude towards McMurphy. later on though when they try to keep up with there "rebellion" if he doesnt back them up i think some of them may grow angry, or at least feel put out by his lack of assistance.

McMurphy's change in behavior will (should) make him look better in the authorities eyes and less of a "savior" to the other patients. This will cause the whole routine of the Combine to go back to the way it was, completely controlled.

i think that the big nurse is going to be mad anyways because she will not be able to punish him, and she will always be suspicious of McMurphy. On the other hand the patients now that they are out of the fog they will rebel and try to be the way McMurphy used to be.

I believe that the Big Nurse will suspect that she is getting to McMurphy and that she has reclaimed some of her power. The Chief said he began to get afraid after seeing McMurphy look so defeated after his conversation with the lifeguard. I believe this sense of hopelessness will also be felt by the other patients.

I believe that the Nurse knows she has gottten to McMurphy because of the drastic change in his behavior, everyone has noticed it, why wouldnt she? The Nurse is hiding her emotion towards the behavior change because that would go against her behavior. Though the Nurse may know about McMurphy's behavior change she will still act calm cool and collected like she has the entire book, that is how she deals with her life. But, I feel like we have not heard the end of McMurphy and there is more to come from him, the fight it not over. The Chief has been affected by the change in beahvior from McMurphy, McMurphy was a breath of fresh air for the Chief and of coarse McMurphy's change will make everyone and everything on the ward go back to "normal" but will still continue to get to the Chief. The Chief has a lot of hope in McMurphy.

Since McMurphy's change in behavior I think McMurphy is going to stay a rule follower for a while, but perhaps slip into his old ways again. The Nurse I think will use the slip (if it occurs) to force whatever cruel punishment she can on McMurphy as pay back for having her loose her temper, and temporarily loose control over the ward, the one thing she values most. I also believe the other patients will begin to see flaws in McMurphy that they did not see, or notice when he was being their leader. These flaws will probably start to annoy the patients and make them start to dislike McMurphy. They will probably go after him in group therapy meetings and have a "pecking party" to get back at their former leader.

I think that McMurphy will try his hardest to make the best out of his situation and be on his best behavior, but I don't think that he will be able to keep it up for very long. I think that the patients will be upset with him while he is on his best behavior, but I don't think it will last long. I think that McMurphy will be back to himself and challenging the nurse in new ways sooner than later.

I think that the patients will begin to regress and start acting the way they were before McMurphy showed up. If the person that they began to look up to is holding back and being timid, it is only natural for all of the patients to become scared of the nurse and afraid to stand up to her.
