Response to Trey's "friends vs pawns"

I think McMurphy organized the fishing trip for everyone's benefit. I think he wanted to gain the support of the other patients by giving them something they never dreamed was possible. Also, I think he is using the trip as a chance to reaffirm his own existance by showing himself that there is a world outside of the world of the ward that he has become absorbed into. He is killing two birds with one stone by giving them confidence and gaining their support. I think he views the others as his friends, but at the same time is using them to enact change in the ward.

I completely agree with you. I really think this fishing trip was a great opportunity for all the patients to grow and really understand who they are. They were able to catch the fish on their own and McMurphy just stood aside and let them do it on their own. I feel that McMurphy has always had good intentions of helping the patients, but sometimes they come off as being selfish. This trip was a really great way for everyone to come together as a whole.

I agree, i belive that the fishing trip was for the patients benifit. They each learend what it takes to accomplish something. Some of them had never done anything similar to this in there entire lives. I think that McMurphy alwase has good intentions when it comes to doing things with the other patients.

I agree with what Trey is saying. The patients realize on the fishing trip that they are capable of functioning in society and do not any "treatment" in the hospital. I think McMurphy is showing the patients the free world and once they see it, they remember what it is like without having the nurse on their backs all the time.

I agree with most of the comments. The only thing is that a fishing trip is not really what society is all about. I believe that the hospital defines society as the ability to hold a job and have relationships with common people. Just because they are all friends and can go fishing does not necessarily mean that they are fit for society.

I agree with most of the comments as well. However, McMurphy can be a little Jekyll-Hyde sometimes with his demeanor towards the patients. At times, he seems to be more involved with gaining a profit than looking out for them. On the other hand, whenever it seems like McMurphy doesn't seem like he cares, he comes out and does heroic things to stand up for the patients to Nurse Ratched. I think this fishing trip not only benefited the patients, but McMurphy as well because it seems like he now knows what are his limits and boundaries while among his fellow patients.

I think that McMurphy is getting more than he expected. I believe at first, McMurphy organized the fishing trip for his benefit, but once the patients got excited for the trip and then during the trip, McMurphy realizes that he is gaining more through his new friendships.

Even though it seems like McMurphy is fighting a war that can't be won, sometimes that's better that doing nothing and giving up. McMurphy is an extremely strong and independent person. He has intentions on his mind that will benefit him but these intentions make him stronger because he is going for what he wants and the other patients in the ward realize this and become stronger from his boldness. They want to have independence and be original because McMurphy has inspired them.

I concur with this idea. McMurphy has been nothing, but helpful to these men since he came into the ward. Before he arrived, each and everyone of the residents in the ward were slowly being tormented by Nurse Ratched, she controlled them like puppets. Once McMurphy came along, he cut the strings that she had. He seems to care for the inmates and his own well being equally. He will not let them crumble that easily, if they're gonna go down, he'll make sure that they do so with a fight.

At first I thought McMurphy was using the trip to escape, but I realized he organized the fishing trip for everyone to grow closer and bond. In doing so, he did gain the support of the other patients like Trey mentioned, and made stronger friendships with the others in the ward. After this trip McMurphy realizes back at the ward means back to reality and he isnt so excited about that.

I completely agree with TJ. McMurphy is killing two birds with one stone by organizing the fishing trip. The new confidence that he is bringing to the patients by being himself helps them recognize that they arent as helpless as they may have previously thought. In addition, by taking them out of the ward into the real world its helps them to realize what they are truely missing in life and have more the live for then what the ward has offered them.
