Chief turned away

I found it really interesting when the Chief suddenly began to talk to Mcmurphy but it was even more interesting that the following morning when he was supposed to sweep the hallway like usual he just walked away and said basically that he was "better than that."  To me this seemed like a completely new side of Chief because for him to be left unnoticed he would need to maintain his normal routine around the staff but this was a clear act of defiance.  What does everyone else think about this?

This simply shows what kind of impact McMurphy has made on the ward, not only has he inspired Cheswik but he has also gotten Chief to get out of his shell and finally stand up for what he believes in. By him standing up to the aids it proves how much power McMurphy really has and also how he is now become the figure head of the ward and now everyone looks up to McMurphy. Moreover, McMurphy has not only brought Chief out of the fog but also has empowered him to vote against Nurse Ratched and now no longer let the guards boos him around

McMurphy has become a symbol of hope for the patients in the ward. McMurphy makes people want to share their opinion because he is so open and outgoing. He even made a man pretending like he was def and dumb for years come out and talk. I thought that was a true example to his influence. Even though McMurphy seems to be all positive and help on the ward he does stir up a lot of arguing and has some selfish motives, such as escaping he is planning he big escape with the help of other people in the ward. I think there might be a point in which speaking out is too much and there has to be some order we will have to see the breaking point.

I agree with both Colin and Sean when they say that McMurphy has been a new sign of hope. Since he has entered the institution he has wanted to become the leader of it all but I dont think that he expected or purposely wanted to become this motivational figure. Even by having chief open up to McMurphy is a sign of him taking steps towards getting his "bigness" back. Chief talks about thinking that McMurphy is literally bigger than him when in fact it is not true. This can be seen as both Chief's mental illness or that with McMurphy's attitude chief sees him being superior and bigger than him.

McMurphy was the catalyst in the ward for the acutes. He caused excitement in the ward and caused the chief to come out of his shell and speak. When McMurphy entered the institution with the intent to be the leader and trouble maker. I belive that the trip that McMurphy has set up will be the changing point in the book for some of the acutes and they will return with different outlooks on the outside world.
