The Chief's Vote

Near the end of Part One the Chief raises his hand in response to McMurphy's plea to vote, suggesting to the other patients and the staff that he was only pretending to be deaf. Will he stop acting completely and help McMurphy defeat the Nurse or will he pretend his vote was a coincidence and hope it is forgotten? What do you think the Big Nurse will do to him when and if she finds out that he can hear?

When the Chief raised his hand, it was a huge break through for him even if the vote did not count. He was so amazed and proud of himself for finally having the courage to do so. It seemed as if he enjoyed the feeling of gaining courage and the power of unity. As for what could come next, I think the Chief is going to eventually gain more courage and use it in the end to help defeat the nurse.

I feel that McMurphy’s second vote was an outstanding break through for the Chief as well as a catalyst for further rebellion and unity from the patients in the ward. Although the Chief describes his participation in the vote to be done by an outside ‘wiring job” done by McMurphy, I believe that the Chief was unknowingly inspired by McMurphy’s unsafe ways of living which allowed for him to break free of the fog and take a stand as a person. I wonder if Chief will soon come out openly about not actually being deaf to McMurphy or anyone else on the ward? and when Nurse Ratchet does discover what her reaction will be and how she will handle it.

I think that the Chief's vote was a huge step for him in becoming an individual. Instead of remaining in the fog and pretending to be deaf, he decided to step outside of his box, and I think that this will happen more and more. I think that he will help McMurphy in his plans against the Big Nurse, who will not be defeated easily.

When the chief raises his hand to vote its a big step for him. I feel like he wont stop acting completely but he will come through when McMurphy really needs him to step up. i dont believe the nurse will do anything if she finds out but watch him a lot closer.

I believe that the Chief will slowly stop acting but it will not be something that happens overnight. Its going to take time for him to open up to others around him and when he does i think his hallucinations of the fog will go way as well. i think the nurse will find i way to destroy his confidence and this destruction will ultimately lead to his death.

After the Chief raises his hand he mentions that it was all because of McMurphy, that he forced him to raise his hand. Then he comes to realize that it was really himself that raised his hand, that he did it all on his own. This simple act is the Chief standing up for himself and making a difference on the ward, even though they don't get to watch the series. Chief realizes that it is better to be heard than to hide. I believe that he will no longer hide in the "fog," he will look towards the "enemy." The chief is going to stand up from now on and try to make the rest of his time there standing up for himself and standing with McMurphy.

If the nurse finds out that the chief can really hear and understand whats going on in the ward she will use this againt Mcmurphy. Mcmuphy doesnt want to put the other patients in danger and nurse ratched will exploit this situation. I believe the nurse will take the Chief along with the other men and start punishing them to get to Mcmurphy. She will give them EST and labotomy's until Mcmurphy settles down. She will pick on the other men because she cant touch Mcmurphy unless he slips up. Until then she has to get to him in other ways and if he shes her harming others he might back off.

I believe that the chief will continue to play deaf and dumb. He will probably hope that everyone just forgets so he can go on as he has been. McMurphy has already figured out that the Chief is faking and the Chief seems to be drawn to McMurphy. So the Chief may start trying to communicate with him. At this point in the story, I think Nurse Ratched will just think it was a coincidence. The Chief has been there so long and she has never suspected that he can speak or hear. But if she figures it out she will do everything in her power to make him miserable.

When the Chief raised his hand it showed that he is slowly gravitating out of his shell and gaining more courage as a result. This action may cause some of the other Accutes to fallow in his foot steps and learn how to stand up for themselves and there beliefs. I believe that McMurphy and him will become closer and work together to overpower the Nurse.

I think Bromden will eventually give in towards the end of the book in order to help McMurphy or to personally take down Nurse Ratched. He's a powerful guy who just needs to confront his fears about reality and the outside world. Once he completes that task, he'll fight to leave the ward anyway possible. Also, to be honest, my bare-raw opinion about Nurse Ratched's reaction when she finds out that Chief was only pretending to be deaf is that she is going to flip a s**t! She's going to become even more sadistic then before and we are probably seeing the "nice" Nurse Ratched right now. If those in the ward think it's a nightmare at the moment, they'll soon see that they have dived into the heart of Dante's Inferno.

I agree with Trey in that the Chief will not start acting not deaf, but the Big Nurse will still raise her suspicions and keep a closer eye on what he is up to. I feel that the Chief will put down his act when McMurphy needs his help the most.

I think that the Chief will eventually stop pretending to be deaf, but it will take time. He still has the hallucination of the fog, which may be holding him back because the fog represents safety. I think that when he finally does come out of his shell, his hallucinations will go way. Knowing that the Big Nurse backhandedly destroys the inmates' confidence, she will certainly try to do the same for Chief when she finds out that he's not deaf. He may have to take a trip to the shock shop as well.

I believe that it took a lot of courage for the Chief toraise his hand and get out of comfort zone. To me this is the start of him getting out of that symboilzes his hiding place form the world when things get rough. I also think that this could be the beggining of an allaince as well as a friendship between McMurphy and the Chief. But the nurse no that she knows he can hear will probably make his life miserable like the rest of the patients by briging up his insecurities and things that hurt him the most in order to control him.

I BELIEVE THAT THE CAUSE OF THE CHIEF VOTING IS DO TO THE NEW ATTITUDE MCMURPHY HAS WARD. THE OTHER PATIENTS ARE BECOMING MORE PRONE TO HIM AND HIS EASY GOING MOOD TOWARDS EVERYTHING. FOR THE CHIEF IN PARTICULAR, I BELIEVE THAT HIS CHOICE TO VOTE HAS CAUSED A REVOLUTION WITHIN HIMSELF TO ACT OUT OF SYNC WITH HIM NORMAL SELF. THIS IS HIS REACTION TO MCMURPHY IN THAT HE NO LONGER FEELS THE NEED TO HIDE HIS TRUE SELF FROM EVERYONE ELSE.

The Cheif is going to continue living in the ward as the deaf and dumb patient that everyone believes he is. At least at first he will. This way he continues to gain information for McMurphy. I can see the Cheif opening up to McMurphy in the future but he is not ready yet. Should the Big Nurse find out the he has been faking this whole time, i am sure that the Cheif will recieve punisment/treatment for his illness (because pretending to be deaf and dumb is certainly not acceptable in the Nurse's society).

I believe that when McMurphy chose to raise his hand it was a very significant to the novel because it showed his amount of strength and courage,. It shows how he broke out of the fog instead of acting scraed and faking being deaf. I believe that later on in the novel toward the end, McMurphy is going to build up enough strength and dersire to put away the nurse and defeat her of her hateful misdoings.

i feel that no one will pay attention to the chief. they will probably just assume he raised his hand because others were raising their hands. he is smart enough to keep his act secret, so i feel the big nurse will never realize the act.

The cheif raising his hand was his way of coming out of his shell but then he realized that he was now showing how he isnt deaf and is trying to recoil back so as to not get involved. He is now conflicted with whether or not to stay in the shadows or to begin to help out the other patients. I think that when it comes down to it the cheif will give himself up and help McMurphy which possibly could cure him of his paranoia if he knows he can stand up for himself.
